Acknowledging the NIHR Maudsley BRC

Research in the NIHR Maudsley BRC at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London  must be appropriately acknowledged in peer reviewed scientific journals. If you have been collaborating with us, or using our computing resources for your research, we ask that you acknowledge our contribution in any publications arising from your work. The following guidelines are provided to assist you:

It is appropriate for authors receiving salary support from the NIHR Maudsley BRC to include the NIHR Maudsley BRC as part of their affiliations (for King’s College London academics please remember that King’s College London needs to be the primary address in any list of affiliated organisations). However the NIHR Communications team has advised that at present, they still require an additional explicit statement acknowledging the relevant NIHR Maudsley BRC in the Funding or Acknowledgment sections of scientific papers. Please note the Trust (South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust) needs to precede the University (King’s College London) in the order of wording. Some examples follow:

[The Author (s) (Name (s))] receive salary support from the NIHR Maudsley BRC at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London. The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NHS, the NIHR or the Department of Health.

The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NHS, the NIHR or the Department of Health.

Other contexts of financial support from the NIHR Maudsley BRC also must be acknowledged with an explicit statement in the Funding/Acknowledgement sections of peer-reviewed papers. If the research has been funded by core theme budget or pilot project grant from the NIHR Maudsley BRC or if NIHR Maudsley BRC full salary supported individuals are substantially involved in the design, execution, analysis or reporting of the research then it is appropriate to acknowledge the financial context of the NIHR Maudsley BRC support. Examples follow:

This study [ took place at / was [part / fully] funded /financially supported ] by the NIHR Maudsley BRC. The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NHS, the NIHR or the Department of Health.

If the research is not directly financially funded through the BRC but is supplemented by external funding or has utilised BRC infrastructure, e.g., BRC funded methodological /technological/IT supported platforms; databases, systems or work processes; capital equipment; imaging resource /scanning time, BRC supported facilities, BRC funded specialist expertise; patients recruited by BRC funded individuals or through SLaM generally, then please acknowledge BRC infrastructure support for the research. Examples follow:

The authors acknowledge infrastructure [funding/support] from the NIHR Maudsley BRC. The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NHS, the NIHR or the Department of Health.

This research was conducted at/in the [Name of Facility] which receives infrastructure funding from NIHR Maudsley BRC. The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NHS, the NIHR or the Department of Health.

Finally, please note that NIHR is keen to ensure its investment in BRCs is also appropriately recognised in research outputs that results in media news stories. If you have a high impact research paper funded/supported by the BRC which has significance in the context of experimental medicine/translational research/new treatments/approaches to treatment /patient benefit or enhancing translational clinical research generally, then please contact Louise Pratt in the IoP Communications Office as soon as your paper is accepted for publication so that they can assess whether it is suitable for a press release and work with NIHR and other partner funding bodies’ press offices to ensure it is appropriately branded .
